Renaming themselves Pearl Jam, the band recorded their debut album, Ten, in the beginning of 1991, although it wasn't released until August in the meantime, the majority of the group appeared on the Andrew Wood tribute project Temple of the Dog. Dave Krusen was hired as the full-time drummer shortly thereafter, completing the original lineup. Thanks to future Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, the demo found its way to a 25-year-old San Diego surfer named Eddie Vedder, who overdubbed vocals and original lyrics and was subsequently invited to join the group (then christened Mookie Blaylock after the NBA player). After Mother Love Bone's vocalist, Andrew Wood, overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. Pearl Jam emerged from the ashes of Mother Love Bone, a hard rock band who missed their shot at the big time. The group's inclination to follow a winding path meant that by the time Pearl Jam left the 1990s, they were no longer ruling rock music the way they did at the start of the decade - a period when Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy sat at the top of the charts as they racked up millions of sales - but were left with an enormous and devoted cult that allowed the band the freedom to experiment while remaining true to their rock & roll ideals. Vedder's emotional acuity remained a touchstone for Pearl Jam throughout the years, giving the band's unpredictable business moves, such as their mid-'90s battle with Ticketmaster, and embrace of controversial causes genuine heft. Much of this earnestness stemmed from Eddie Vedder, a lead singer of uncommon charisma and passion who helped the group's arena rock moves seem intimate. Unlike many of their Seattle brethren, Pearl Jam, as a collective, were never signed or affiliated with an indie label - founding members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament both were veterans of Green River, one of the first major bands on Sub Pop, though - and in an age defined by irony, they were unflaggingly sincere. A performance of the song is also included on the DVD Live at the Garden.Pearl Jam rose above the legions of grungy alt-rockers littering the early '90s to become the most popular and enduring American rock & roll band of their time. Live performances of 'Breath' can be found on various official bootlegs.

The song has since returned to Pearl Jam set lists. 'Breath' finally made a return appearance at the band's Septemconcert in New York City at Madison Square Garden. During the band's 1998 Yield Tour an organized fan campaign dubbed the 'Breath Campaign' was started in which fans brought signs to shows requesting the song. After the band's Apconcert in Boston, Massachusetts at the Boston Garden, the song was not performed live for a period of four years. 'Breath' was first performed live at the band's Octoconcert in Seattle, Washington at the Off Ramp CafР“В©. The song was kind of cool at the time because it reminded me of performing. It was just another chance for me to do a lot of leads. That was a really old song of Stone's from his days in Mother Love Bone. We didn't really have time to mess around and bring in my Vox AC30 and my Steinberger! We had a day-and-a-half to do it, so I just played through my normal setup. I used a Les Paul and Marshall on that track. 'Breath' is on the first demo we did as a band.

The same sessions also produced ' State of Love and Trust', 'Dirty Frank', and the re-recorded version of ' Even Flow'. This version of the song was recorded in 1992 and was one of the first songs to be recorded with drummer Dave Abbruzzese. The version of 'Breath' recorded during the Ten sessions, entitled 'Breath and a Scream', appears on the 2009 Ten reissue.Р”Р„ re-recorded version of 'Breath' later appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 film, Singles. The song originated as an instrumental demo called 'Doobie E' that was written by Gossard in 1990.
